Organization For Your Pet

Your fur baby needs structure too

There's no better feeling than coming home to your furry best friend who has been waiting all day long for you! Admit it, we love to spoil them while making sure they are staying healthy. All that responsibility means there will be many items that we need to ensure they are happy and healthy. Organizing these supplies can be very helpful and make your life less stressful, so you can enjoy more time with your best friend! In this article, we will share some tips to help with that and maybe help you think of their other supplies that need organization as well.

1. Dog Toys

  • Bring together all the toys. Yes! All of them even the ones that are stuck under the couch or the ones that they like to hide.

  • Decide what to keep and what to throw out.

Remember, you can donate what you throw out to your local animal shelter. Some in the Austin area are:

  • Austin Humane Society

  • Humane Society SPCA

  • Austin Animal Center

  • Austin Pets Alive

  • Wags & Whiskers

  • Texas Human Heroes

The list goes on and on but those are some of our favorites!

  • Goodwill is also a great option too or any local thrift store near you

  • Get a basket to put all the toys into.

  • Put it back in the basket after they are done playing.

Doing this provides a clutter-free space for play, as well as him being able to grab the toys directly from the basket! It also provides a much easier way to clean up at the end.

2. Medication & Food

We have to keep our fur babies healthy and happy! Once I noticed how tough it was to find where his medicine was or treats, I decided to take these steps to organize all of the dogs' medicine and treats.

  1. Gather all your dogs' medication such as

    1. Allergy medicine

    2. Parasite control

    3. Dental care

  2. Organize treats into one bin with the medication

  3. Get a folder for medication records

    1. This has been SO helpful to me especially when we move around. It makes the process at his new vet or grooming salon go smoothly and hassle-free.

  4. Set calendar reminders for medication

    1. We know life gets busy! Our phones are always in our hands every day so why not go ahead and add in reminders to give our cute pups their medicine?!

    2. If using the calendar doesn’t work for you some apps you could download are:

      1. Virbac RemindMe

      2. DogLog

      3. Pawly

  5. Dog Food

    1. Wherever you place your dog's bowl is where you should keep your dog's food. Nearby in a container within a closet is a great place to store it. Investing in an easily movable container and a dog food scoop is great for a quick refill of your dog's food bowl.

    2. To have less of a mess a good idea would be to put a tray or a mat under the bowls. We know how excited they get when it's feeding time.

These simple steps have been a lifesaver and make me feel like the best dog parent out there!

3. On the Go Supplies

Our fur babies love being able to go anywhere with us! I have found it super useful to have a basket by the entryway of the house. It is easily accessible for not only myself but whoever is caring for my dog.

Here are some supplies that I make sure to have in there:

  • Waste bags

  • Portable and collapsible water/food bowl

  • Treats

  • Leash

  • Harness

  • A ball

Your dog will get so used to this basket that he will know what is going to happen once you start pulling things out of it. It makes it easy to grab the leash and go out! If you are feeling like going above and beyond have most of these items ready to go in a travel bag. It will be an awesome feeling knowing you can grab-n-go with your best friend!

4. Grooming Supplies

If you bathe your dog in the house, grooming tools should be stored within a cabinet nearby wherever you groom your dog. For easy access, I put all of those supplies in their own bin with items such as:

  • Shampoo

  • Conditioner

  • Grooming shears

  • Brush

  • Eye wipes

  • Nail clippers

  • Ear and eye cleaners

  • Spray bottle

  • Towel

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Comb

5. Outdoor Toys

Outside bins can provide good storage space for outdoor supplies for your dog. Multiple bins can be used to store different supplies. For example -

  • Toys

  • Waste bags

  • Grooming supplies if you groom your dog outside

Tracking dirt inside is the worst! Especially on a rainy day. Having a system in the backyard for your dog will help with making sure there isn't extra mess to clean up when it's time to go back inside.

Let's face it, these fur babies are our pride and joy. Any amount of time we can spend with them matters so much! If our lives are organized, why not take some time to organize their lives as well?
